The Coffee Pot Has Changed Little From Kettle To Mr Coffee

The shape of the coffee pot has changed, but little has changed about what it does. The pot brings together coffee beans and hot water to brew coffee. The coffee can be in the form of whole beans, ground beans, freeze dried coffee, or even instant coffee. Water can be hard, soft or distilled. The coffee maker ensures that the hot water and flavorful coffee beans unite to produce the wildly popular hot caffeine beverage.

Coffee maker pots are related to the kettle family of cooking implements. Early coffee makers simply boiled beans and water together in an open kettle. Coffee was the result, but it contained coffee grounds and other residue. Percolators brew coffee by holding the ground coffee above the water level. Heated water erupts upward through a central funnel and cascades over the beans, constantly bathing the grounds in the brewing coffee. Longer brewing time results in stronger coffee. Some percolators make pots of coffee using electricity, while others can sit directly on a campfire to make a pot of coffee.

The instant coffee maker, also called the drip coffee maker, offers several improvements over the percolator. When a drip coffee maker brews a pot of coffee, the hot water contacts the coffee beans only once. The beans must therefore be finely ground. A disposable coffee filter prevents the fine coffee grounds from entering the serving pot. This type of coffee brewing became popular after the introduction of the Mr. Coffee brewing system.

The coffee press is a relatively new method of making a pot of coffee. Also called a French press, this unique pot brews coffee by using pressure to force the hot water through the ground coffee. Hot water and coffee are placed into the coffee press pot and allowed to brew for several minutes, depending on taste. Depressing the plunger forces the coffee grounds to the bottom of the pot, resulting in a pot of strong, aromatic coffee.

Modern pots come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, but they all do the same job. The recipe for coffee consists of only two things, so all the coffee pot has to do is intimately mix the coffee with the hot water.
